FAQ
Who can see my answers to the questions during the study visits?
No one but you. You will be in a private room when you answer the questions on the computer. After you have completed the study visits, the research team will be able to see the answers you gave but they will be identified only with a code number. Only the most senior researchers on the team will be able to link your identity to the answers to your questions and they will only do this for the purpose of joining the different sets of data.
Will I be interacting with anyone during the study visits?
When you arrive at our lab for your study visits, a trained researcher will guide you through the informed consent process and answer any questions you may have. However, you will be by yourself in your own private room while you are reading through and answering questions about yourself and the story. At no point will you be interacting with any other participants. If you have a question or concern that cannot be handled by the researcher who is conducting your experiment, you may interact with the Research Specialist or the Principal Investigator. Facial covering and social distancing guidelines will be observed during any interactions you have with the research staff.
When does the study take place?
If you are eligible for the study, the questionnaire session will be scheduled as soon as possible after the screening survey has been completed.
Once you have completed the questionnaire session, you will begin the daily surveys on the following Thursday. You will receive one daily survey each day for the next 32 days. You must complete that day’s survey before it closes at 11:59pm.
About halfway through the daily survey period we will contact you to schedule you for an appointment to come into our lab for the beverage administration experiment. We schedule appointments throughout the day Monday – Friday and, very occasionally, on Saturdays. We will work with you to find a time that meets your schedule. The study visit may take two to seven hours to complete and you will be paid $15 per each hour. You must be able to complete this study visit within one month of the end of the daily survey period.
How much will I get paid?
You will get $30 for completing the questionnaire session as well as parking compensation up to $10 with proof of parking; $5 for completing each daily survey; $15/hour, with a minimum of $50, for the time you spend in our lab for the beverage administration experiment; a $100 bonus if you complete at least 80% of the daily diaries and complete the second in-lab session. You will also be entered into a drawing to win $100 if you complete the questionnaire session, at least 80% of the daily surveys, and the in-lab experiment. Therefore, you can receive up to $395 in compensation for your participation with the chance (odds: 1 in 25) of winning an additional bonus prize of $100.
What if I can’t make it to my scheduled appointments?
If you cannot make it to your questionnaire session, we will work with you to try and reschedule your appointment. You must complete the session within one month of completing the screening survey; if you cannot, you will have to retake the screening survey to re-determine eligibility.
If you cannot make it to your originally scheduled beverage administration experiment, we will work with you to try and reschedule your appointment. You must complete your study visit within one month of the completion of the daily survey period. If you are unable to do this, we will still pay you for completing the questionnaire session ($30) and daily surveys ($5 each). We will send you an Amazon gift card to your email address. You won’t be eligible for the $100 bonus prize drawing.
What precautions have you put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19?
You will be asked whether you are experiencing any COVID-19 related symptoms when scheduling your in-person sessions and again when you arrive for your appointments. Any participant who is experiencing symptoms will be asked to reschedule for at least two weeks later and will be rescheduled again if they are still experiencing symptoms. All participants and research staff will wear facial coverings and maintain social distancing during their appointments. The participant rooms are thoroughly sanitized before and after each participant.
